Brushes with Fame

I took that time off from my usual routine to make it to my son’s Gymboree Olympics. I didn’t expect in my entire life to be competing with another Gymboree mom Judy Ann Santos in a beach ball throwing contest and that my son would be competing with her adopted daughter Johanna Lois a.k.a. Yohan.

How did it feel? Doubly tensed: first the pressure of wishing your son would win and the thought that you were competing with a celebrity and the country’s showbiz superstar.

Nevertheless, seeing Juday (Judy Ann’s nickname) and Ryan Agoncillo there made me realize the importance of quality time. That if there’s a will to bond with the family, there will always be time.

Oil prices trends have recently been going down based on global market rates and these cut across diesel, gasoline and LPG. The thing is, the Philippines’ oil industry is highly deregulated, which means that the government cannot simply impose that oil companies in the country should follow suit. Nevertheless, I would like to believe that the good news on the global level will certainly help temper or halt or even better lower local oil prices as well. I know that for one, Flying V are rolling back its prices. Even now I already feel like filling up on gas full tank by end of this week and let the good times roll.

I couldn’t believe that Micheal Buble has an alter ego decades his junior in the person of Charlie Green. The super cute, British-Filipino nine-year old is currently making his country proud as the Finalist of Britan's Got Talent show. He had a brief stint with ABS-CBN in terms of shows and a farewell concert. I am sure that his parents are doubly proud of their son for his achievements as such a very young age.

New Free Station - ABC 5

Television station ABC 5 signed off on August 8, 2008 to launch its new brand name “TV5.” With the new brand comes an overhaul of its programming especially its roster of talents except for ABC 5’s tried and tested ones such as “Shall We Dance” hosted by Lucy Torres. I have yet to watch the new program line-ups and see if the new name will elicit big interest to see what 5 has to offer.

Beijing Olympics 2008

There’s something about being out of your own country that makes you perform extra hard and even better. Think Lea Salonga, Billie Crawford, Arnel Pineda and Charisse Pempengco. There’s that sense of Pinoy pride you carry with you. I hope this will be the kind of spirit that the 15 Filipino athletes will carry with them while the Beijing Olympics 2008 is on-going.

Project Runway Philippines happened to be showing on TV one morning. I was able to see the episode where all the designer housemates were coming in.

Two of them are from the Visayan region…. yippee yayeey! I feel proud that we have kasimanwa in this first ever version in the Philippines’ popular show. I hope they kick-off and to the region proud.

Project Runway Philippines is an upcoming Philippine adaptation of Project Runway. This reality television series, which aims to find the next big Filipino fashion designer, is produced by Unitel Productions. It will be shown on July 30, 2008 on cable through ETC Entertainment Central and on free TV through SBN 21.It is hosted by model and actress Teresa Herrera, with fashion designer and faculty member of School of Fashion and the Arts Joji Lloren serving as mentor. Filipino top model and lifestyle feature writer Apples Aberin-Sahdwani and fashion designer Rajo Laurel complete the judging panel.The winner will receive P500,000 (roughly US$11,000) in cash, a start-up business package, and an editorial spread in Mega magazine

Hole up to Neverneverland

Peter Pan is “the boy who refused to grow up.” That’s all I heard about Peter Pan and nothing else.

Despite its prevalence in the books and the world of Disney, I never really had a chance to watch nor fully captured the story of Peter Pan. Thanks to the internet, I was able to “google” my to get to know him. According to MedicineNet.com, “Peter Pan is in reference to J. M. Barrie's classic 1904 play in which a boy who refuses to grow up teaches Wendy and her younger brothers how to fly and then it's off to magical Neverneverland for adventures with mermaids, Indians, and wicked Captain Hook and his pirate crew.

It saddens me that Peter Pan has become an idiomatic expression about people who refuse taking responsibility for their actions and hence, the “Peter Pan Syndrome.” This is a term coined by pop psychology author Dan Kiley in his book "Peter Pan syndrome: Men Who Have Never Grown Up."

But I choose to see it from a different perspective. I would like to put the “Peter Pan Syndrome” in a positive light because personally, I believe that one must never lose touch with the “child” in them.

Peter Pan is a child. A child doesn’t worry, is full of fun, openness and imagination. In contrast, “adulthood” can be boring/not fun, too structured and even controlling.

Once in a while, I find it quite comforting to hibernate in my own “Neverneverland” and enjoy the company of “dreams, fantasy and other possibilities” that nobody can take away from you no matter what is happening in the real world at that moment. The upside of this is that it balances off whatever “adulthood” matters that I need to face and deal with from day to day.

I do not run away from responsibility and I am happy to have a bit of “Peter Pan” in my hormones. Thankfully, as of date, “Peter Pan” is not a medically accepted syndrome.
